Fish Out of Water

-Sengkang Punggol FC Fans' Perspective-

S.League 2010 Match 23

Opponent: Balestier Khalsa
Date: 23rd Jul, 1930hrs
Venue: Jalan Besar Stadium
Final Score: 1- 0 (Kenji Arai 24′)

A back to back win since May last year. Winnable games were finally won.

Another crucial aspect was that Sengkang Punggol has finally exorcised the Balestier Khalsa curse. The previous 2 encounters saw the Tigers claiming rather undeserving victories and added 6 crucial point to aid their decent position in the league table now.

If Kenji Arai, the goal hero as well as the impeccable bulwark at the rear, was t9uted as the signing of the season, I think Fadhil Salim’s season long consistency ensured the gem was acquired in close season in 2009.
The former Gombak United custodian had singlehandedly bailed the Sengkang Punggol defense out and in this game made some wonderful save.

Without first choice fullbacks in Meng Meng and Duncan, the makeshift defense which also included recent recruitment Ratna Sufian and Azfar Zainal did well to hold Balestier at bay, though it might be the Tigers being toothless which really helped the Dolphins for another useful 3 points.

The backbone of this new squad was forming shape and gaining momentum.
Fadhil, Kenji and Mamadou up front look a good squad though Nor Azli had to display his passion in less destructive form but his dismissal had allowed the newly-assembled squad to show a tad more maturity in their play in maintaining the lead.

As mentioned before the team had to grab as many point as they could for the remaining 10 games especially continue winning games they could and should win.

  2. It was a good win. Was impressed with the likes of kenji arai, ratna suffian, and even the left back named zainal something. Sobrie and diallo work hard too, even though the former’s skill is not that good… We can win even with less than 3 foreigners playing for us, with webb introduced in second half and whereever ahn jae chul is,nv seen him play before. The local players are all committed and hardworking. nor azli must have a temper check, especially since he is wearing the armband. Where is shahir hamzah as well?dropped or injured??lol…anyway, i think etoile match is winnable as well if the boys gave in the best.

  3. Not only that the defence was rock steady and stable, the midfielders really work their socks off. especially when we are one man down. Well done Sengkang. It was a very good and discipline team performance.

  4. Shahir probably did not play as he is involved in the Singapore Selection for the game against Burnley.

  5. Hello folks! Yes, it was indeed really heartwarming to see the Dolphins show their fortitude in holding on for 2 gritty wins.

A short intro of myself: a few of my buddies and I are Manchester United fans who have decided to not just watch EPL, but to support the growth of our nation’s football as well. As such, we have decided to adopt Sengkang Punggol FC as “our” club to stand by (though I personally live in the west side! *grin*). Mainly in part due to our support for our good friend Aide Iskandar, and now by extension, the whole of SPFC.

Also, to show that supporting a team doesn’t mean that we only follow winning teams, but that we stand by our team through thick and thin. Our dream is to do our small part to help grow the fan base for Sengkang Punggol.

Hence, it is from 18th July vs Beijing Guoan that we took that step of faith, and stepped up to cheer our team on. It is not right for us to claim for ourselves the credit for the last two wins – mainly, the boys themselves fought with their hearts out for those precious 6 points, as well as Aide’s tactical genius – but I must say that it just goes to show how crucial fans’ vocal support is for our boys. It gives them the impetus to fight for the whole 90+x minutes on the field.

Hope to be able to meet you and other fellow SPFC fans on Tuesday vs Etoile @ Queenstown stadium, the same small but vocal contingent of us be there again to will the boys on for (hopefully) another shock win over the French lads.

    Cheers!

    – MerV

PS. yap, yup you’re right, he was being saved for the Burnley game next day.
