Fish Out of Water

-Sengkang Punggol FC Fans' Perspective-

S. League 2010 Match 8

Opponent: Geylang United
Date: 15th Apr, 1945hrs
Venue: Bedok Stadium
Final Score: 3 -2 (Peter Tomko 53′, 59′, 79′ – Sobrie Mazlan 29′, Murphy Wiredu 55′)

In the end the team with the better striker won.

A barricade laughably flimsy.

Even lucky charm Johan Johari cannot avert a defeat.

Long distance football viewing. No good for my eyes.

I can't wait for The A-Team movie too.

Sobrie's maiden goal!

Murphy's first league goal!

The man with the last laugh though.

Wretched Thoughts
Gotta say this match was pretty painful to sit through, literally and figuratively.

A torrential rain peppered the island hours before kick-off. This was followed by the uncomfortable after-showers warm front, a condition no sane person enjoys. Sitting on the butt-numbing hard concrete slab of Bedok Stadium in front of a lifeless audience (and not a whole lot, I should add) far away from the field only escalated my viewing experience for the worst.

Hey at least the football would be worth the money and trouble, right?

Wrong.

Both teams weren’t up for the game: the home team was defending deeper than my pockets and never looked like they had any intention to entertain their home fans. Then again positive football is not a word one would associate with the Geylang of late, so hardly a surprise. As for the Dolphins, another night of despair.

The defence on the whole was woeful, summed up by the second and third conceded goals. 1.88m Peter Tomko vs. the pairing of a vertically challenged centreback and a makeshift one who couldn’t outjump a Singapore U-17 kid. Little wonder who would emerge victorious and head home a freekick. The lack of height and muscle in the middle of defence was already exposed once in the Balestier match. Unfortunately the crack is still pretty evident. The third goal was even worse: a miscommunication between defenders and the keeper on who to go for the bouncing ball. Easy pickings for Peter for his hat trick.

The midfield played a forgettable game, so much so that I have already lost any recollection on what they did. On the attack third Farizal was non-existent against his former paymaster. Jordan was subdued though he managed to provide the assist for Sobrie’s goal. His next memorable effort came in the dying minutes of the match as the team tried to salvage a draw, an attempt eventually chalked as offside.

Three defeats on the trot now. Not healthy from a result’s point of view.

  1. i was at the game itself…and i agree with wreckidigidy that the whole match experience was kinda poor. the seats were uncomfortable and the weather just kinda makes everything look so sloppy. including our defence.

sorry but i have to be critical here. but how can the defence let the ball bounce! this is absolutely suicidal!

moving on, i thought we played okie upfront in the first half. the passes that we saw early on in the season was coming back. so that was encouraging. sobrie had a well taken goal. so congrats to him.

credits to jordan as well. i can see that he is trying very hard, but it is difficult to play well when the opposing teams have been putting double-teams on him recently. so, yeah keep up the effort! and good assist for the first goal.

a rare start for jaspar…yeah. carried out his duties well, keep it up!

i believe we have to aim for a better result in the next game against the young lions…

  2. I was also at the Bedok stadium. Overall the Sengkang team played better then their last game. Attacking wise the team look quite dangerous especially on the right side with Jordan and Sobrie inter switching their positions.

There was a bit of a problem in defence though, Nur Azli and Abdul lack ommunication and understanding. Nur Azli is obviously the leader at the back. Giving instructions and marshalling his defence. What he lack is actually height. This has been the problem for the team lately. Especially when facing opponents with tall forward. I’m sure Aide will solve this problem before the team’s next match.

The team really need a tall centre back. Azli can still play because the team need him and his leadership. But he should be playing on the right side of defence.

Lastly, the way the team is palying. I think we should have a chance in getting 3 points on our next game.

  3. Well, hope they pick something from out of this and gain maximum points for the games from now on.

And yea, who signed up and took the free bus ferry to Bedok Stadium?

    • Might be rooted to the bottom for a while unless they perform admirably against Young Lions and Balestier
